Black’s Barbecue – Lockhart, TX

Black’s Barbecue is it. After hearing all the hype about Lockhart BBQ, namely Black’s, I decided to make the 30 minute drive out to Lockhart to see what all the fuss was about. Boy, was it worth the drive!

After finding a parking spot in a small parking lot to the side, since all the street parking was taken, I walked up to the old wooden door that led to the establishment. The staff behind the counter were very friendly and talked about the different sides they had to offer. I decided to forego the sides and headed straight for the meat.

The brisket was some of the best I’ve ever had, a class of its own. The lean cuts were about as juicy as most other BBQ places’ moist cuts are. The smoke ring was very apparent, with the amazing flavor and seasoning washing throughout the entire cut. No BBQ sauce needed – their moist cuts just melt in your mouth.

The sausage was amazing and the star of my visit. Almost indescribable, but I will do my best. The crisp skin broke easily as I took my first bite, and the sausage inside was so tender, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned. Unlike any sausage I’ve ever tasted; well-seasoned, but not a hint of saltiness as most other sausages usually are. This sets a whole new standard for sausage. It was almost crumbly but in a very good way. Again, very hard to put into words the amazing texture and flavor of their sausage.

They had a seasonal sausage that was also very good. It was like Thanksgiving in a sausage! The flavors of turkey, stuffing, cranberry, and whatever else was mixed in just exploded in my mouth. It was like a thanksgiving sandwich but in sausage form. It also had the same crumbly delicious soft texture as their regular sausage that I loved.

The dining area was rustic but very functional with complimentary ‘fixins’ that are the norm to BBQ: onions, pickles, and bread. Thankfully they had to-go containers and aluminum foil for the leftovers that I happily packed for my next few lunches at home!
